Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach

Stormy weekend

Been raining pretty hard off and on today. Here's what it looked like outside my house around 3:30 this afternoon.

LowePro Fastpack 250

Got myself a new toy today... a LowePro Fastpack 250. From the manufacturer:

"You can shoot all day when you wear the lightweight, comfortable Lowepro Fastpack 250 backpack. It protects a digital SLR with an 18-55mm or 17-85mm kit lens attached plus 15.4" widescreen notebook while providing generous storage for 2-3 additional 105mm f/2.8, 18-200mm f/3.5, or 70-300mm f/4.5 lenses, flash, and other gear. You won't miss a shot, because side-entry compartments let you grab equipment and accessories, even while you're on the move. Customize the easy-to-access main compartment with adjustable dividers, use the outer organizer to keep large accessories handy, and manage memory cards with a built-in pocket. Breathable, contoured shoulder straps distribute weight evenly."

I want to be able to carry a decent amount of gear with me without having to resort to multiple bags. I'll report back on how this puppy does on a 2 week long trip.

Friday... yippee!

Thank God it's Friday!

It looks like Rahm Emmanuel is out

If this article isn't telling, I don't know what is: In praise of Emmanuel.

The Male Brain

I want to get my hands on both books. I've never heard of Louann Brizendine before but this sounds interesting:

The Male Brain.

Mexican food weekend

Enchiladas yesterday, carne asada tacos today... it's a weekend of Mexican food. Yummy!

Saturday night

Delicious mole enchiladas and enchiladas rancheras, old friends, and good times. What more can you ask for?

Moon Cakes

Last week was the Mid-Autmn Festival or Lantern Festival (Vietnamese: Tet Trung Thu). One of my favorite things to eat is the Moon Cake and they're only available during festival time. It's ubiquitous and can be thought of as the Asian fruitcake, except it tastes much better.

It's filled with anything from durian paste to mung bean paste or red bean paste or mixed candied nuts & fruits or lotus seed or any other types of filling. Sometimes there's a salted duck egg's yolk inside and sometimes not. Don't let the salted duck egg yolk put you off them; if you get a chance, try some with some hot tea... they're really good!

Linux Browsers

I've just installed Linux Mint, a variant of Linux based on Ubuntu on my Dell XPS M1330 notebook. Linux Mint looks great. The developer of this distro is right... it looks quite elegant. I'm keeping Vista (piece of crap) as my backup since that's what the notebook came with when I got it last year. I thought about installing Windows XP as the main OS but decided why not try Linux after a hiatus and see what happens.

One of the first thing I noticed was that the Firefox browser is horrendous under Linux. It's really buggy and seems to crash a lot. So I opted for the Opera browser and as of now it seems to be working very. I like it a lot better so far. I'll keep everyone posted on my thoughts on how Linux Mint works as my main OS for this notebook.

Labor Day weekend

Thank god for a long weekend. The recent heat has made me so tired lately so I really need this break. I'm trying to make this post on an iPhone so let's see how this works. So far typing on this thing is not easy at all. I think that even after some time it would still be difficult.

Why the Breathalyzer does not work

The Death of Twitter

I've never understood Twitter. More than that, I don't understand how so many media outlets jumped on this bandwagon. I've never used the site but I have looked at it out of curiosity. My take on it is that it's a "microblogging" site that limits posts to 140 characters. Don't you just love the way they come up with these new terms?

In any case, when you post to Twitter, you're "Tweeting" and your post is a "Tweet". Not a twat or twit, but a tweet. I know, I know, it doesn't make any sense but I suppose I know why. A twit is a silly or foolish person, so posts on Twitter can't be a twit. A twat is... well, we all know where that's going. So tweet it is I guess. By the way, I just don't think it masculine for guys to admit to "tweeting." But hey... that's just me.

In any case, I guess my hatred of Twitter is based upon the idea that I'm reading someone's post on a blog somewhere. Then they'll say, "Follow this story on Twitter!" Or when I'm watching say CNN... "Follow this breaking story on Twitter!" And invariably my question is why? I read someone's blog because I want to read their blog. I don't want to go to another site to continue reading about a particular post, be it updates or whatever. Same with watching TV. I watch the news to get the news. By making that choice, I've already decided not to go online for the news, which I do all the time. Given that, why would I choose to follow a TV news story on a whole new site? I just don't get it.

But hope is near for the death of Twitter. And I'll be one of the first to celebrate it. Apparently, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails is quitting Twitter. The only reason this actually even made news is that he is apparently known for being into social networking and what not. I know some of this is tongue in cheek, but I say about fucking time! Disneyland 2009

I went to Disneyland this weekend with a bunch of friends from work. It's been almost 20 years since I've been so things are different. For example, the Indiana Jones ride is new to me, even though it's been there for a while now. Captain EO is gone (told you it's been a while) and I saw the fireworks show for the first time. The prices are still high though, so I guess some things never change. It was so hot in Anaheim and it was just mid April. I can't imagine how people handle it during August and September. Anyways, here are the photos:
